While there are a variety of different dates in which countries celebrate Mother’s Day, in the UK this most commonly falls on the second Sunday in March and traditionally involves presenting mothers with flowers, cards and other gifts.
Celebrations of Motherhood date back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans. The UK origins of Mother’s Day are said to have formed from the Christian celebration of Mothering Sunday, which fell on the fourth Sunday of Lent and saw followers gathering at Church on this day.
Today's current tradition of Mother's Day incorporates both the Christian tradition with the American celebration, founded in 1908 by Anna Jarvis. Jarvis passionately petitioned for Mother's Day to be accepted as a national holiday in the US and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made it into official U.S Holiday.
In 2010 it was reported to have been the busiest day for phone calls and with over 19 million registered famillies in the UK, there will be plenty of mothers celebrating on Sunday 11th March this year.
