Tipsy Tea

HOW TO ENJOY TIPSY AFTERNOON TEA

Nothing adds sparkle to afternoon tea like a naughty dash of alcohol. Here’s how to do it in style…

1. Dress for the occasion
Hats are always a good choice, as are elegant gloves. And for extra fun you can always ‘go retro’ and dress like it’s the 20s Or 30s. Or 40s. Any great tea-drinking era, in fact (just make sure you don’t accidentally dip your feather boa into your cup).

2: Choose whether to ‘sip or tip’
You can either sip a cheeky glass of the stronger stuff alongside your cup of tea or, if you want to be daring, tip your alcohol into the tea itself (our suggestions for how to complement your tea are in the right-hand column).

3. Soak up the alcohol with treats
After all, you don’t want to get too tipsy (do you?). So make sure to have plenty of sandwiches, scones piled high with jam and cream, cakes and pastries - whatever takes your fancy.

4. Invite an old friend
Everyone knows that the best time to swap confidences is over afternoon tea enhanced with a dash of alcohol or two. So get in touch with an old friend who you have been meaning meet up with and let the tea (and the gossip) flow!

5. Have a little nap when it’s over
Afternoon tea at Elite Hotels is an institution, so make the most of it and turn your afternoon treat into an overnight stay. This way you can treat yourself to another glass of bubbly …or two.

TIPSY TEA COMBINATIONS

• Lady Grey and Champagne
A light, zesty cup of Lady G will match your glass of fizz perfectly.

• Black Tea and Baileys
You’ll have to tip your Baileys into your tea to experience this scrumptious blend. It creates a rich, creamy brew with a hint of vanilla.

• Earl Grey and Gin
A classic combination, the note of bergamot in Earl Grey is a great complement to gin.

• Green Tea and Martini
A pairing that’s growing in fashion, this is a very chic choice.

• Lapsang Souchong and Islay malt whisky
A connoisseur’s selection. The peaty flavour of Islay whisky tastes wonderful with strong, smokey Lapsang.
